Evert Nijland - Artist and Jewellery Designer
A pioneer of contemporary jewelry, known for blending historical elements with avant-garde design. His pieces are intricate and bold, challenging traditional craftsmanship by combining materials and techniques such as glass, textiles, wood, ceramics, and precious metals. Evert Nijland’s work sits between jewelry and sculpture, combining organic growth, historical references, raw stones, and carefully constructed forms.
The challenge was not simply to reproduce a sketch digitally. It was to understand which irregularities carried meaning, which structures needed precision and where the work needed to remain open, alive and unresolved.

The Wilhelminaring is the national lifetime achievement award that has been awarded every two years since 1998 to a Dutch visual artist over the age of fifty. The prize consists of a ring specially designed for the winner. Evert Nijland was chosen to design the award for the winner in 2023, Henk Visch,

It’s a special time when we get to work on a new series of work. We’re looking forward to the final results.
The first time Space Junk met Evert Nijland was in Evert’s Studio. Evert described a set of new, challenging concepts and ideas. They were ambitious enough that he wasn’t sure who could actually develop them. He asked if it was possible and without hesitation we said, “No problem”. Evert knew, from that moment, he’d found the right collaborator.
More than half a decade and four collections later, the work still starts the same way it did the first day. Evert brings sketches, material references, and the feeling he’s chasing just before he knows exactly what it should look like. Our job starts there too, understanding a drawing for what it wants to become.
Often the challenge for an artist is not the ability to describe what they have in mind but how those ideas are translated. Every artist has a unique way of working and together we develop a process that feels natural. Sometimes a sketch is enough. Other times, we start with a clay model. 3D scan it, manipulate the design digitally and create prototypes to test the original idea. The goal is to translate the idea without limitations keeping the original intent intact.
The collaboration between Evert Nijland and Space Junk has produced 2 collections “Wings” and “Still Life”, an award “Wilhelminaring”, and we are currently developing Evert’s upcoming collection.
